Reviewing what we’ve seen from Husker QBs Heinrich Haarberg and Jeff Sims so far.
Heinrich Haarberg had just ripped off one of Nebraska’s better offensive plays of a second half that was being weighed down by the fumbling and bumbling.
Thirteen yards around the left side. You’ll take that every time. Except on this play the Husker quarterback stepped out of bounds a yard short of the sticks. Nebraska got the first down a play later, although the drive would eventually be derailed by a continuation of self-inflicted wounds late in Nebraska’s 20-7 win over Illinois.
But in the postgame Friday Rhule mentioned his QB stepping out short of the marker to make point it seemed. A point about how he’s going to keep driving the quarterback for more.
«I told him, ‘I want to coach him.’ I’m going to coach him like I would coach a really good one,» Rhule said. «He stepped out of bounds on that one down on the goal line when he could have gotten a first down.
I went after him in the middle of the game. Because just like last week when I put around him and said, ‘I’m going to coach you through it,’ I went after him there.»
As it has been noted before, one admirable trait about Haarberg is he seems a player built for tough coaching as he learns on the job.
