There was allegedly an ugly incident during the Maryland and Nebraska game this past Saturday. A Nebraska fan was reportedly arrested for spitting on a Maryland player during the game, according to KETV.
David Hernandez was arrested for disturbing the peace after a complaint by Maryland defensive back Gavin Gibson was given, stating that Hernandez spit on him, the TV station reports.
Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule was asked about the fan being arrested during his press conference this week.
“I would hate to comment. That’s the first I’ve ever heard of that, so I would hate to comment on that without knowing what happened,” Rhule said.
While Rhule was not aware of that incident in particular, he did speak about the Nebraska fanbase as a whole, stating that he has had nothing but good encounters with Cornhuskers fans since being hired.
“I mean, my experience with Nebraska fans and Huskers fans has been unbelievable,” Rhule said. “My wife walks home after the games. She doesn’t even drive. She just walks. I know everyone wants to win, but all the Huskers fans, I think, have been amazing.”
Rhule added that he has heard from others around the country who have spoken highly of the Nebraska fanbase.
“The way we are on the road — story after story people have told me about coming here and the experiences that they’ve had,” Rhule said. “So I unfortunately don’t know anything about that, and I certainly would hate that that was true, but I would say I haven’t met anybody but great people since I’ve been here and just glad to be a part of the community.”
While Hernandez has been arrested, according to KETV, he insists he is innocent and that a player tried to spit on him, not the other way around.
However, Lancaster County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said in a press conference that he had already warned Hernandez and another Nebraska fan to stop jawing at Maryland players.
“They were talked to, by me, prior to that to knock it off. And then they left prior to halftime,” Houchin said.
KETV reports that, according to Hernandez’s attorney, his client went to the bathroom and didn’t leave the game. The attorney added that he believes security footage will show that Hernandez is innocent, per KETV.
Maryland ended up beating Nebraska 13-10 on Saturday. Up next, Nebraska plays at Wisconsin this weekend, while Maryland will host Michigan on Saturday at Noon.
