Huskers lock in deal for athletic director Trev Alberts. Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts received a contract extension that was formally announced on Tuesday afternoon.
The new deal would make Alberts the athletic director for the Huskers through 2031 should he complete the terms.
There’s plenty of changes in the new contract with outgoing Nebraska president Ted Carter saying the new deal is structured similar to other Big Ten athletic directors with an emphasis on keeping the Huskers competitive in the market, while retaining Alberts and locking him up for the long term.
The new deal includes an annual base salary of $1.7 million, which increases to $2.1 million in 2026. There’s also a series of retention incentives paid out to Albert each year he stays after 2025 and a $3 million completion bonus if Alberts completes the eight-year agreement.
Also in the contract is language for buyouts from Alberts to the university should he leave for another opportunity.
Nebraska also noted the entirety of Alberts’ new contract, like his previous one, will be paid by athletic department funds and not through taxpayer or tuition funds.
The Huskers tabbed Alberts to become the new athletic director in the summer of 2021. In his time as the head of Nebraska athletics, Alberts saw the firing of then football coach Scott Frost in the fall of 2022, as well as the hiring of Matt Rhule to replace Frost in the same year.
Alberts was also heavily involved in Nebraska securing a $300 million multimedia rights deal with Playfly Sports, after the Huskers had previously brought things in-house under former athletic director Bill Moos.
Carter offered more remarks regarding Alberts in a press release announcing the extension.
“Today’s college athletics landscape is complex and ever-changing,” Carter said. “We need exactly the right person leading Husker Athletics forward. In Trev Alberts, we have found that leader.
“Trev is a lifelong Husker and a Nebraskan in every sense – hardworking, accountable and a man of his word. He makes every decision with our fans and student-athletes at the forefront. There is no one I would trust more to lead athletics at the University of Nebraska than Trev Alberts. I have no doubt that someone of Trev’s caliber and character would be an attractive candidate anywhere, but I am thrilled to tell Husker Nation that Trev is here to stay.
The release also contained comments from Alberts about the agreement.
“My family and I are humbled by the confidence that President Carter and the Board of Regents have placed in me,” Alberts said. “It is an incredible honor and privilege to serve as the Director of Athletics at Nebraska and it is a role I don’t take for granted. Our student-athletes, coaches and staff have accomplished so much in the past two years. We have great momentum in Husker Athletics and we are excited for what is ahead. Go Big Red!”
