ORLANDO, FL – Well after just one week following Gus Malzahn’s resignation, athletic director Terry Mohajir and UCF have identified their next head coach, Scott Frost. Per sources the Knights have agreed to terms with Frost, originally reported by Matt Murschel of the Orlando Sentinel.
The former UCF head coach led the Knights to a perfect 13-0 season in 2017, with the university claiming a share of the national championship after beating Auburn in the Peach Bowl. Prior to the conclusion of the AAC Championship Game that season it was reported that Frost would return to his alma mater, Nebraska, to coach.
A five-year stint with the Cornhuskers did not reach the heights that Frost or the Nebraska faithful hoped for and this season he has been an assistant for the Los Angeles Rams, working with special teams including former Knights longsnapper Alex Ward. Rejoining UCF he’ll become the ninth head coach in program history, Frost will need to move quickly with the transfer portal for all schools opening on Monday.
He becomes athletic director Terry Mohajir’s second football coaching hire at UCF, having hired Malzahn as his first act as athletic director.
Following hiring Frost for the Rams, Super Bowl champion Sean McVay said,
«Scott’s a guy that I’ve always you know really respected from afar. He came out and spent a couple weeks with us this offseason and there’s a lot of mutual connections. Shoot I was an option quarterback I remember watching him doing his thing at Nebraska. I was like fanboying him, but as a coach. He was obviously a good player in the NFL, played on special teams was a really tough DB, played the safety position. Lot of mutual connections, you know this coaching thing is a really small fraternity of people, so we’ve crossed paths over different years. Then just watching him from afar and then getting a chance to see him spend time with our group and a lot of different people on our staff. Felt like a really seamless, wanted to get back in it, he’ll help Chase out on special teams, but he’ll also have involvement on offense and defense. But, just to be able to get a quality caliber coach like him in the building as you guys know we’ve had a lot of turnover for the right reasons and you can’t have enough good quality people in house.”
