The moves continue on the defensive side of the ball for Nebraska’s coaching staff as former Central Florida defensive coordinator Addison Williams has accepted the job to take over Nebraska’s secondary, per 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz.
Williams most recently served as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Central Florida under Gus Malzahn, while also coaching defensive backs. Williams’ defensive backs often were among the best in their league in pass efficiency, leading the Big 12 in that category in 2023 by allowing 196.7 yards per game. Williams, who joined UCF in 2021 added the title of assistant head coach prior to the 2022 season.
Prior to the 2024 season, Malzahn hired veteran defensive coordinator Ted Roof to work along side Williams as a co-defensive coordinator. Roof lasted just eight games and was fired, while Williams stayed on coordinating the defense. Malzahn then left UCF to take over as offensive coordinator at Florida State.
At Nebraska, Williams will bring valuable experience to the defensive side of the ball, where former secondary coach John Butler is taking over as defensive coordinator. Williams will join a group that will have Rob Dvoracek coaching linebackers, in addition to Phil Simpson handling outside linebackers. Nebraska has yet to officially announce the hire of KC Chiefs assistant defensive line coach Terry Bradden, though Bradden has been using social media as though he will be part of the Husker staff.
Nebraska also intends to add longtime Rhule defensive coordinator Phil Snow as an associate head coach with a hand in some of the oversight of Nebraska’s defense.
Prior to his time at UCF, Williams coached safeties at Coastal Carolina in 2020, following stints at Auburn and Furman. At UCF, Williams was paid a salary of $700,000.
A native of Atlanta, Williams played three seasons at cornerback for South Carolina from 2007-09, appearing in 26 games before an injury ended his career.
