The Huskers bolstered their quarterback depth with the commitment of Marcos Davila, who announced it on social media Friday night.
A visitor to Lincoln to begin the week, the QB is an important addition for Nebraska and has four years still to play after spending his first season redshirting at Purdue.
NU was down to Dylan Raiola and incoming scholarship QB TJ Lateef as scholarship QBs after the departure of Daniel Kaelin, who ended up at Virginia, and with Heinrich Haarberg planning to take more of a focus at tight end. Walk-on Jalyn Gramstad is still with the squad and has been important in bowl preparations, but it’s not certain what his status is for next season.
Davila, a former four-star quarterback last recruiting cycle, signed with Purdue as part of Ryan Walters’ 2024 class and spent the season with the Boilermakers where he redshirted. Following the year and Purdue’s firing of Walters, Davila entered the portal.
There’s a bit of logical Nebraska connection as well with Dana Holgorsen having recruited Davila while the coach was the head man at Houston.
The four-star played for Midland Legacy in West Texas where he was a multi-year starter that put up big passing numbers and earned the attention of more than 20 schools, before he ultimately committed to the Boilermakers. The 6-3, 233-pound Davila threw for more than 9,000 yards and 90 touchdowns in his high school career.
When 247Sports analysts held a roundtable about the Elite 11 finalists in the 2024 class, which included Raiola, Andrew Ivins named Davila as one QB he would have liked to have seen invited there. Said Ivins, «I believe he’s one of the top pure passers in Texas this cycle and I would have liked to have sized him up alongside some of the other more high-profile names in the class.»
Davila is the seven known portal commitment for Nebraska.
In addition to the quarterback Nebraska has added two specialists – punter Jack McCallister and long snapper Kevin Gallic. And three defensive linemen – Williams Nwaneri, Jaylen George and Gabe Moore. And one wide receiver in Nyziah Hunter.
The Huskers are hosting another big receiver visitor right now in former Kentucky wideout Dane Key, who was getting his first look inside Memorial Stadium on Friday night. He has the likes of Georgia looking his way but also was coached at his position last season by new NU receivers coach Daikiel Shorts.
The 6-3, 210-pound Key had 126 catches combined for the Wildcats the last three seasons and put up 715 yards on 47 receptions during the 2024 season.
