The former Bulldogs defensive back committed while visiting Lincoln this weekend.
Nebraska has plucked another from the portal.
Justyn Rhett, a transfer safety out of Georgia, arrived to Lincoln for a weekend visit and didn’t leave without announcing Saturday night a commitment to the Huskers.
In a loaded Bulldogs secondary, Rhett appeared in two games in 2024 for Georgia with a couple of tackles. He redshirted during the 2023 season while playing in two games. His position coach at Georgia that year was current Syracuse head coach Fran Brown, who was an assistant under Matt Rhule.
Rhett will have three years to play at his new program. With a 6-1, 200-pound frame, Georgia worked him as a safety this past year.
He was a well regarded recruit out of the powerhouse Bishop Gorman program in Las Vegas. The 247Sports rating system had him as a three star. He was a four star and ranked No. 374 among all prospects in the 247Sports composite. Prior to signing with Georgia, he had been committed to Notre Dame and Marcus Freeman.
As a high school senior helped Bishop Gorman to a 13-1 season and NIAA Class 5A state championship.
The 247Sports evaluation of Rhett out of high school included this: «This a player with all the physical traits that schools are looking for in a player on the backend who could end up playing either corner or safety. He can contribute on special teams and provide depth early in his career. Becoming a power (conference) starter with the could have position versatility that will be a an asset in the secondary enable him to have a chance to also see an NFL future.»
The Huskers have a success story on the roster right now in MJ Sherman worth noting here. Sherman arrived to Lincoln two years ago having played limited snaps on defense at Georgia, but then found a key role for Nebraska as a starter as the Huskers continue to try to climb.
NU will lose some veterans after the bowl game at the safety/rover spots in DeShon Singleton and Isaac Gifford. Cornerback Tommi Hill is also gone from the secondary moving forward. Key returnees include cornerback Ceyair Wright and versatile defensive backs Marques Buford and Malcolm Hartzog.
A healthy crew of younger players are pushing to jump into that mix during bowl practices right now, with new secondary coach Addison Williams having been officially announced a couple days ago to lead that group into the bowl and beyond.
Ceyair Wright mentioned Donovan Jones, Caleb Benning and other younger guys who have impressed him with their work preparing for the Dec. 28 Pinstripe Bowl against Boston College. Said Wright, «I’m excited to see how everybody goes out in the bowl game and plays.»
And it now appears a former Georgia Bulldog will join the competition in January.
Nebraska has eight known additions from the portal with the announcement.
Rhett’s commitment puts him at the table with wide receiver Nyziah Hunter, defensive linemen Jaylen George, Williams Nwaneri and Gabe Moore, punter Jack McCallister, long snapper Kevin Gallic and quarterback Marcos Davila.
