The injury occurred in the third period when Guhle awkwardly fell into the corner after catching an edge while pinching in from the blue line. His right leg bent awkwardly and took the full force of the impact against the boards. He needed help getting to the dressing room and couldn’t put any weight on his right leg.
Guhle, the Canadiens’ 16th overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, has become a key player on their blue line in just his third NHL season. He’s averaging over 21 minutes of ice time per game and often takes on tough assignments, including starting nearly 60% of his shifts in the defensive zone. His absence would leave a significant hole in Montreal’s defense.
Although the Canadiens have promising young defensemen in the AHL, none are ready to step up and take on Guhle’s heavy responsibilities. His injury comes at a tough time, as Montreal is in the mix for an Eastern Conference Wild Card spot. Losing him for an extended period could hurt their playoff chances.
On the bright side, the upcoming break for the Four Nations Face-Off in February might give Guhle some time to recover. If needed, Montreal could explore outside options to fill the gap. With 12 draft picks this year and nearly $6.5 million in cap space ahead of the trade deadline, the Canadiens have room to make a move if necessary.
