Patrick Mahomes knows why the Philadelphia Eagles blitzed the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. The game was never competitive after Jalen Hurts and the NFC champions built an early lead. Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl MVP, gunned for his third straight title with the Chiefs, which would have set an NFL record.
However, by the time Cooper DeJean returned an errant throw for a touchdown in the second quarter, the Chiefs were down multiple scores with only 23 yards of total offense.
«Obviously the turnovers hurt, I take all the blame for that,» Mahomes said after the game. «Those early turnovers swing the momentum of the game and they capitalized on them. They scored on one and they got a touchdown immediately after, so that’s 14 points I kinda gave them. It’s hard to come back from that in a Super Bowl. Just didn’t play up to my standard and I have to play better next time.»
Mahomes, a former three-star prospect from Texas Tech who shattered various program records in the Big 12, was sacked six times, intercepted twice and fumbled. Philadelphia didn’t call a single blitz during the matchup.
«Defense wins championships,» Hurts said. «We saw how they played today. We saw the difference they made in the game. They gave us opportunities, gave us short fields. And we’re able to do what we do.»
Per CBS Sports, Hurts is one of eight quarterbacks to play in two Super Bowls in his first five seasons. All of the quarterbacks are in the Hall of Fame or will be in the Hall of Fame — Mahomes, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Russell Wilson, Kurt Warner, Troy Aikman and John Elway.
Hurts finished 17 of 22 for 221 yards, two touchdowns and an interception his second career Super Bowl start, while also rushing for 72 yards and a score.
«I can’t control what these people think, but if it takes all the hate, all the scrutiny, and all the different opinions for me to be a world champion, then keep it coming.» Hurts told NFL Network after the game.

Mahomes was a 247Sports three-star recruit out of Whitehouse (Texas) High. He holds the FBS passing records for most offensive yards in a game at 819 and sits tied for the most passing yards in a game at 734. Mahomes was 12-13 in his two full seasons as a Texas Tech starting quarterback, including a 5,052-yard, 411-touchdown junior year. Mahomes was the No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
