Husker signee Tyson Terry makes history while capping perfect wrestling career

Omaha North’s Tyson Terry would not be denied in his march for a historical feat.

The Husker football signee, who will join the Nebraska program this summer as a defensive lineman, fittingly pinned his final opponent in the Class A heavyweight state wrestling championship on Saturday in Omaha.

The second period pin of Omaha Creighton Prep’s Roberto Macias-Sidzyik made Terry the first four-time heavyweight state champion in Nebraska high school wrestling history. He finishes his career 169-0.

As he told reporters afterwards, he battled through this senior year to make history too, with repair work planned next week from a fall football injury.

Tyson Terry just announced that he wrestled through a torn ACL which he suffered during football season.

He left his shoes on the mat after his final match, briefly. An old wrestling tribute when a career is over. And a fitting one for this career.

«I was 4 or 5 years old when I first started wrestling …» Terry told Husker247 last year of his love for the sport. «My dad was kind of coaching, just training me growing up. It’s been a long journey.»

The last time he lost? That was the eighth grade to some kid in Pennsylvania. Terry had a tough semifinals match on Friday night prior to his Saturday pin, but won in double overtime.

Terry shared previously how wrestling helps so much with what he wants to get done as a football player too.

«In wrestling, you’ve got to be live on your feet, you’ve got to have good hips. You’ve got to have good body control. In football I feel like that helps a lot, just using my hands well … Just the natural body movements … It’s just being more athletic and just knowing your leverage and how you can work your different things. It definitely correlates,» he said. «Wrestling, it’s a demanding sport. It’s a lot of mental toughness … Just getting in those deep matches and the training for them. You get in pretty good shape in wrestling season. Just to have wrestling in my life is very important I think.»

And how has he handled the pressure of staying unbeaten?

«Everyone’s trying to give you your best shot and the target’s on my back. Everybody’s trying to break the streak, but it’s just about trusting myself and having confidence in what I do and who I train with, and how I train – and the wrestling that I’ve built up over the years. It’s just the confidence in myself of knowing that nobody is going to be able to out-wrestle me and no one is training how I’m training and who I’m training with. And so it all goes into those moments like that.»
