Slimmed down Ty Robinson runs blazing 40 at NFL scouting combine

Nebraska defensive end Ty Robinson showed up at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis down about 10 pounds from where he was at the Senior Bowl and put together a blazing time in the 40-yard dash.

Robinson checked in at 6-foot-5, 288 pounds in Indianapolis and ran 4.83 in the 40-yard dash, with a 1.71-second 10-yard split. For his second try, Robinson ran 4.89 seconds. The 4.83 time goes down in the books as his official.

The time in the 40 was the fastest among the first group of defensive linemen working out at the combine on Thursday. The 10-yard split was third among defensive linemen working out Thursday. The NFL account put out a reading that showed Robinson was running 16.98 mph after the first 10 yards, which was tops in the group and should grab the attention of the people who matter.

He backed that up with a broad jump of 9 feet, 11 inches and a vertical of 33 1/2.

«This young man, Ty Robinson, has been exceptional throughout today,» said NFL Network analyst Charles Davis. «Terrific, hard-nosed effort player at Nebraska. You know what else he is? Athletic as hell.»

Robinson’s athleticism score test of 82 ranked first among defensive tackles testing in his D-line group.

Husker head coach Matt Rhule was on the scene at Indianapolis, and said on the Pat McAfee Show prior to Robinson’s workout: «He’s one of your kind of guys. Like, you would love this guy. Tough. Hard-nosed, blue collar, great athlete. Going to go to medical school when he’s done. A real guy.»

Robinson is one of four Huskers at the combine, joined by Thomas Fidone and Tommi Hill, who will test on Friday, and also wide receiver Isaiah Neyor. Nebraska’s Pro Day for other Husker hopefuls is set for March 25 in Lincoln.

Along with his 6-5, 288-pound measurements, Robinson had arms at 32 1/4″ and a hand size of 10″. Certainly one of his mentors was proud. Former Husker great Jason Peter posted on X: «When ur boy texts u this morning from Indy telling u he weighed 288 and then runs 1.71 and 4.8….LFG!»

NFL.com draft expert Lance Zierlein had this to say about Robinson heading into the NFL Combine:

«Bully with a roughshod playing style that forces blockers to match his physicality. Robinson is built for the trenches with the versatility to play in odd or even fronts. He’s first into contact with his hands and mitigates average knee-bend with brute force in his upper half. He’s powerful to set edges but lacks length to control and quickly shed NFL blockers. He’s an effort rusher with active hands who can exploit a weak edge and thrive in gaming fronts but possesses average creativity. Robinson might not be a star, but his effort, strength and demeanor could make him a productive pro for years to come.»
