Georgia Southern freshman offensive lineman Tay McKibbins died after a battle with cancer, the school announced Thursday. The 18-year-old graduated from Cartersville (Ga.) Cass early and enrolled at Georgia Southern in February. The school established a GoFundMe campaign to assist McKibbins’ family with medical and funeral costs.
«It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our friend and teammate, Tay McKibbins,» Georgia Southern coach Clay Helton said in a statement. «Tay lost his battle with cancer this morning and our thoughts and prayers are with his family in Atlanta. He was taken away from us far too young, but his memory will always be etched on our hearts. He is forever an Eagle. Love you, Tay!»
McKibbins intended to major in Business at Georgia Southern. He is survived by parents Britney Robinson and Harold McKibbins, younger brother Carter Stoval and numerous family, friends and teammates.
«Eagle Nation, we are heartbroken by the passing of our beloved teammate, Tay,» a message on McKibbins’ GoFundMe page reads. «He was more than just a player — he was a brother, a leader, and a true embodiment of what it means to wear the Blue & White. His passion for Georgia Southern football and his love for his family and friends, although short in time, will never be forgotten. … Let’s come together as one family, one team, and one Eagle Nation to honor his legacy. You will always be with us, Tay.»
McKibbins was a three-star recruit in 2025 class. He chose in-state Georgia Southern over a handful of other offers, including Western Kentucky and Coastal Carolina. He earned second-team all-region honors as a junior at Cass High School.
«I chose Georgia Southern because on my official visit the whole entire staff showed nothing but love and made it feel like home,» McKibbins said on National Signing Day. «I love the way Coach Lank and Coach Helton are very truthful to the players.»
