The college football recruiting world witnessed some theatrics on Thursday when one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2027 class, Trae Taylor, announced his commitment to Nebraska. However, the manner of his decision drew a playful jab from an opposing team’s quarterback.
Live on the 247Sports YouTube channel, Taylor, who had narrowed his choices down to Nebraska, Illinois, LSU, Michigan, and Texas A&M, created a moment of suspense. He initially pushed aside hats representing other schools before picking up and donning an Illinois Fighting Illini cap. The drama didn’t end there, as Taylor then tossed the Illinois gear aside to reveal his true pledge to the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
This elaborate announcement caught the attention of Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer. In a social media post following Taylor’s commitment, Altmyer playfully called the highly-rated recruit a «corn ball,» seemingly referencing the theatrical hat fake-out.
Taylor’s decision to join Nebraska in 2027 positions him as a potential successor to Dylan Raiola, who is entering his second year as the Huskers’ starting quarterback this fall. Taylor is considered a four-star recruit and ranks among the top six quarterbacks in the 2027 class, as well as the No. 66 overall prospect. During his sophomore season at Mudelein (Ill.) Carmel Catholic, he showcased his talent by completing 191 of 282 passes for 3,061 yards with 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions, while also adding 342 rushing yards and four scores.
Taylor cited his strong relationship with Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule as a key factor in his decision. «Always wanted to have a very strong relationship with the head coach,» Taylor said. «And Coach Rhule has been a huge part of my recruitment. My relationship with him was the strongest of all the head coaches.»
Recruiting analysts have noted Taylor’s significant development between his freshman and sophomore years, with expectations of continued growth. 247Sports Director of Scouting Andrew Ivins described Taylor as a «cerebral quarterback prospect» with the potential to be a «trusted facilitator» at the college level.
