Sophomore pitcher Tucker Timmerman delivered a standout performance on Friday night, leading the Nebraska Cornhuskers to a crucial 3-2 victory over the Michigan Wolverines in the opening game of their weekend series. Making his first weekend start as a Husker, Timmerman pitched seven strong innings, allowing just one run while striking out five and walking only one batter.
«It was incredible,» Timmerman said, reflecting on his outing in front of a crowd of over 5,800 at Haymarket Park. «Just to be able to go out there and compete with my guys. The dudes behind me had a great day in the field. They played so hard and I was up there playing for them.» Timmerman’s seven innings marked only the fourth such start for a Husker pitcher this season and the first since April 11th.
Nebraska head coach Will Bolt lauded Timmerman’s competitiveness and command. «Friday night game, that’s what it’s supposed to look like,» Bolt stated. «We played amazing defense, Tucker was ultra competitive and had three pitches for strike working and that’s what a Friday night fight looks like. He just kept attacking the zone and that was a huge performance.»
Michigan took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after a leadoff walk came around to score on an infield single. However, Timmerman quickly settled in, inducing a double play to limit the damage.
The Husker offense responded in the bottom of the second against Michigan starter Kurt Barr. After Joshua Overbeek and Case Sanderson hit back-to-back singles, Riley Silva drove in the tying run with an RBI double down the right-field line. A walk to Cayden Brumbaugh loaded the bases, and a wild pitch allowed Overbeek to score, giving Nebraska a 2-1 advantage.
Timmerman navigated through potential trouble in the third and fifth innings, escaping scoring threats to maintain Nebraska’s lead. Sanderson, who had a three-hit night, praised Timmerman’s resilience. «Tucker, first Friday night just coming out and dealing. It was big for him, after all the adversity he has been through this year, it was just good to see him have some success,» Sanderson commented.
Nebraska added an insurance run in the sixth. An Overbeek walk and a Sanderson single set the stage, and catcher Hogan Helligso brought in Overbeek with a slow roller to shortstop, extending the Huskers’ lead to 3-1.
Timmerman returned for the seventh and, despite allowing a leadoff single, finished his strong outing with a strikeout followed by a crucial double play.
The Huskers turned to their bullpen in the eighth, but Michigan mounted a rally, loading the bases with one out. Closer Luke Broderick entered the game and walked the first batter he faced, bringing the Wolverines within one run at 3-2. However, Broderick then induced a game-ending double play, securing the narrow victory for Nebraska.
Broderick pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his 10th save of the season, improving Nebraska’s overall record to 25-25 and their conference record to 12-13. «We just need to win a game, you know,» Coach Bolt said. «That’s the name of the game right now — just win as many as we can. It’s always galvanizing when you win one where you have to make big time plays, big time pitches and we get on the right side of those things.»
