The University of Nebraska football program has made a significant splash in its 2026 recruiting class, securing a commitment from promising tight end Luke Sorensen out of Servite High School in Anaheim, California. Sorensen’s announcement on Friday night marks the highest-ranked pledge for the Huskers in this cycle.
Sorensen’s recruitment process has been a fascinating one. The talented California athlete burst onto the national radar this past winter, quickly racking up offers from elite programs across the country, including numerous Big Ten and SEC teams. However, the consistent efforts of Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule and tight ends coach Marcus Satterfield, who were among the earliest to get on board with Sorensen, proved instrumental in sealing the deal for the Huskers.
«I just felt like Nebraska there’s an opportunity to be elite over there,» Sorensen told Husker247. He highlighted several key factors in his decision: «I like the quarterback situation for the next couple years with Trae Taylor, Dayton Raiola, and Dylan Raiola. I love the tight ends coach and Coach Rhule. I love how I fit into the offense, especially the ’12’ personnel. They have pro-style personnel for air raid schemes with Dana Holgorsen as the offensive coordinator. And I love the guys in the room. I feel like I fit.»
While the final decision ultimately came down to Nebraska, Penn State, and Ole Miss, Sorensen admitted that by the time he visited Lincoln, it wasn’t even a three-team race. «It was really between Nebraska and Penn State if I’m being honest. And Nebraska, when I was there, I felt there was no way I could leave that place,» he explained. «That’s where I need to play college football at. So on the visit I felt ‘let’s pull this trigger and get it done with.'»
Sorensen, an inline tight end prospect from Anaheim, Calif., is likely to be the only tight end in Nebraska’s 2026 class. His addition complements an already unique position room that features a quarterback-turned-tight end in Heinrich Haarberg, a reliable walk-on in Luke Lindenmeyer, and a highly touted in-state athlete with significant potential in Carter Nelson, among others like Mac Markway.
The 2026 signee plans to be in Lincoln as often as possible during the season and is already anticipating a trip back in July. Additionally, Sorensen will be an early enrollee, planning to join the Huskers in January of next year.
With Sorensen’s commitment, Nebraska returns to six pledges in its 2026 class, following the recent decommitment of defensive back CJ Bronaugh to Florida earlier this week. Sorensen joins a promising group that includes quarterback Dylan Raiola, wide receiver Dveyoun Bonwell-Witte, offensive linemen Hayden Ainsworth and Rex Waterman, and linebacker Jase Reynolds.
