Huskers keep battling and wind up with a high-upside offensive tackle who only just started playing football.
Nebraska landed a significant recruiting win on Monday when Chicago Mt. Carmel offensive tackle Claude Mpouma announced his commitment to the Huskers, ending a long battle for his services.
Mpouma, one of the most sought-after prospects in the 2026 class, has been a priority target for Nebraska since receiving an offer last October. His decision comes after an unofficial visit for a junior day in February and a crucial official visit in June, where the Huskers managed to sway him over top competitors.
The Key Connection with Nebraska
Speaking about his choice to commit to the Huskers, Mpouma consistently highlighted his strong connection with offensive line coach Donovan Raiola and the entire coaching staff. «Coach Donny and almost the entire coaching staff [are why I chose Nebraska],» Mpouma stated. «Because they are genuine people and our connection is real. I like the culture and the opportunities that come with it.»
Fending Off Elite Competition
The recruitment battle for Mpouma was intense, with Auburn and Florida mounting a significant challenge down the stretch. Auburn was considered the favorite after his official visit there, and Mpouma also spoke highly of the Gators, mentioning how much Florida «felt like home» after his visit. Heading into his Nebraska official visit, it appeared the Huskers had ground to make up, and they clearly succeeded. Prior to the fierce competition among these three, programs like Ohio State, Michigan, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Penn State had also extended offers, with the Buckeyes and Wolverines also making his top five.
A High-Ceiling Prospect with NFL Traits
Mpouma is highly regarded by major recruiting services. 247Sports rates him as a four-star prospect with a 90 rating, placing him as the No. 227 overall recruit in the 2026 class, the No. 20 offensive tackle, and the No. 7 rising senior in Illinois. The 247Sports Composite ranks him even higher, with a .9297 rating, making him the No. 169 overall prospect, the No. 14 offensive tackle, and the No. 5 player in the state.
The Husker staff is known for valuing traits, and Mpouma possesses clear NFL-level attributes. He isn’t expected to be thrust into immediate service, allowing him time to develop and potentially become a multi-year starter. He joins Rex Waterman and Leon Noil Jr. as the offensive linemen in Nebraska’s current class. Mpouma could ultimately slot in as a left tackle but also has the versatility to play the right side. His need for development aligns perfectly with Raiola’s coaching ability and background.
From Basketball Court to Football Field: Rapid Development
Mpouma’s background is particularly intriguing: he was primarily a basketball player who didn’t start playing football until his junior year of high school. Given this, his rapid progress has been remarkable; he’s picked things up quickly and wasn’t as raw as initially expected. He quickly adapted to the physical demands and mental aspects of the game, performing well in high-profile matchups against other Division I recruits. His competitiveness from basketball has clearly translated to the gridiron.
Described as a «physical monster,» Mpouma’s listed size is accurate, and he possesses the rare ability to move his large frame while maintaining balance, something many players his size struggle with. He bends well but still occasionally plays with a high pad level. While already strong, he can benefit from continued time in the weight room.
He transferred from Chicago Phillips to Mount Carmel for his senior year. At Phillips, he was coached by a former collegiate offensive lineman, and now at Mount Carmel, he’ll be under former NIU quarterback Jordan Lynch, ensuring he continues to receive quality instruction.
This senior year will be a crucial showcase for how far he’s come, and further advancement from last year is anticipated. Overall, Mpouma is considered a longer-term ceiling play, but given his accelerated learning curve, he might be ready for significant contributions sooner than expected.
