The Nebraska Cornhuskers are entering the third season of the Matt Rhule era, a period the program has been focused on since his hiring. The stage is set for a significant jump, following Rhule’s historical pattern of turning his previous college teams into national contenders in their third year.
At Temple, Rhule’s team went from a 2-10 record to 10-4 in his third season. At Baylor, he made a similar leap, improving from 1-11 to 11-3. Quarterback Dylan Raiola, entering his second season, is confident that the same trend will hold true for the Huskers. “I believe we can do something special this year,” Raiola said. “You just look at what he’s done in the past, and all you can do is trust his process.”
The team is also bolstered by key personnel. Raiola looks to build on his freshman season with an improved offensive line and an upgraded receiving corps. Offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen praised the quarterback, stating, «He’s making throws that I’ve never seen before, to be honest with you.» On the defensive side, coordinator John Butler begins his first full season leading a unit that finished in the top 20 last year.
Other players are also poised to make an impact. Linebacker Javin Wright, a seventh-year player who has endured health issues, has been voted by his teammates as a leader and is set to be a major contributor. Additionally, freshman punter Archie Wilson has gained attention for his unique ability to kick with both his left and right foot, a skill that can give the team a tactical advantage. The Huskers will open their season on August 28 against Cincinnati at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.
