Heinrich Haarberg is ready for the next chapter of his Nebraska career. After a dedicated transition from quarterback to tight end, the fan-favorite senior is preparing for Thursday’s season opener against Cincinnati, driven by an unwavering work ethic and his deep pride for his home state.
A Position Change That Demands Determination
Over the past eight months, Haarberg has worked diligently to adapt to his new position, a move that, while successful in some cases, is not for many. He himself acknowledges the difficulty, noting that «it’s a completely different game in some aspects.»
Unlike his previous role, he now has to «block and deliver a blow to defensive ends.» Despite the physical challenge, he believes he has grown tremendously in technique, both in blocking and route running.
Haarberg has been aided by teammates like Luke Lindenmeyer and has adopted the philosophy of offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen: that big gains often come from consistently executing routine plays that wear down the opponent.
The Power of Playing for the State
Beyond the field, what truly motivates Haarberg is his connection to Nebraska. The player, who grew up in the state, knows what it means to play in Memorial Stadium. «When you go out and play at Memorial, your entire city is watching you. All your buddies back home are watching you, all your family are watching you,» he says. This feeling, while adding extra pressure, is also a source of great drive. «It helps to motivate you on a Thursday night when you don’t even want to move. All you can think about is Saturday… and that I want to make them proud and play for the state that I represent,» he states.
Now, with a new role and the same motivation, Haarberg is eager to finally face a different opponent and put all the offseason work to the test.
