Juraj Slafkovsky has arrived at the Montreal Canadiens training camp with a clear mission: to shed the slow starts that have plagued his early NHL seasons and establish himself as a consistent offensive force from day one.
The 2022 first-overall draft pick acknowledged that in previous years, he took too long to find his rhythm. “Maybe I didn’t commit to everything I had to do in the last two years. I started doing it halfway through the season,” Slafkovsky admitted. This year, he’s determined to reverse that pattern.
Head coach Martin St. Louis has made it clear that urgency is non-negotiable. “Fantasy hockey is over,” St. Louis said. “The decisions you make in the neutral zone start now. The way you transition from offense to defense starts now.”
Slafkovsky has been reunited with top-line talents Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, a trio the Canadiens hope will ignite early offensive chemistry. At 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, Slafkovsky is expected to leverage his size and skill to win puck battles and generate scoring chances.
“The goal is to play with intensity, use my body, win battles, and score goals,” Slafkovsky said. “That’s what I’m trying to do from the first day.”
