MONTREAL – The nomination of Canadiens forward Patrik Laine and his wife Jordan as finalists for the Sports Personality of the Year award has sparked debate within Montreal’s sports community. The honor, presented by the Conseil du sport de Montréal, aims to recognize individuals whose impact goes beyond athletic performance. But this year, the selection of the Laines is raising questions about what truly defines community contribution.
The couple, who married in June, were nominated for their involvement in the From Us to You x M.A.D Festival Fashion Show, an event that blended style with mental health awareness. While the cause is commendable, critics argue that a fashion show may not be enough to warrant a nomination traditionally reserved for sustained activism and tangible community work.
Jordan Laine defended the recognition: “Our hope has always been to show that strength isn’t just what happens on the ice, but also in the conversations that happen off of it.” The couple also announced a partnership with BetterHelp to offer one free month of therapy to the community, reinforcing their commitment to mental health.
Also nominated are NBA player Luguentz Dort and Montreal Roses president Annie Larouche, both known for their long-standing dedication to social causes.
Voting is open until November 6 at 11:00 p.m. ET, with the winner to be announced at the Podium Montreal Gala on November 20. In the meantime, one question remains: are we rewarding impact—or visibility?
