MONTREAL — On a night when hockey was supposed to be the headline, it was humanity that stole the spotlight. The Montreal Canadiens hosted the Utah Mammoth on Saturday, but the real story unfolded off the ice as the Bell Centre transformed into a sanctuary of solidarity for Hockey Fights Cancer Night, presented by CIBC.
The game itself—featuring two top-tier teams battling for divisional dominance—was almost secondary. Fans arrived not just to cheer goals, but to honor lives.
Over 60 children and families from Leucan, a Quebec-based organization supporting young cancer patients, were welcomed into corporate suites. Twelve Leucan members stood proudly on the blue lines during the national anthems, while one announced the Canadiens’ starting lineup in the dressing room and to the crowd.
Supporters lined up at Section 116 to sign the “I FIGHT FOR” mural and collect co-branded tuques, while players held cards bearing the names of those they fight for—reminders that the stakes tonight were bigger than standings.
Yet, the game went on.
The Canadiens, struggling to close games in regulation, entered the matchup having gone to overtime in four straight contests. Defensive lapses have plagued Martin St-Louis’ squad, allowing three or more goals in six consecutive outings. Meanwhile, the Mammoth—NHL’s youngest franchise—rolled into Montreal on the third leg of a Northeastern road trip, having cooled off after a seven-game win streak.
Noah Dobson, riding a hot streak with five points in his last four games, continued to impress for the Habs. On the other side, Nick Schmaltz led Utah’s offense with 18 points in 14 games, proving to be a consistent threat.
But even as the puck dropped, the STM strike loomed large. With no metro or bus service between 5:45 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., thousands of fans had to navigate the city’s transit shutdown—an ironic twist on a night meant to bring people together.
In the end, the scoreboard mattered less than the message. Hockey may have taken a backseat, but the cause drove the night forward.
