Madness or Genius? Blockbuster Trade Proposal Sending Artemi Panarin to Montreal Shakes the NHL

The NHL trade market has been set ablaze following the leak of a massive trade proposal that would send superstar Artemi Panarin to the Montreal Canadiens. With his current contract with the New York Rangers set to expire at the end of the 2025-26 season and confirmation that the Blueshirts will not re-sign the Russian forward, rumors of an immediate exit have shifted from a mere possibility to an urgent reality that has Montreal on edge.

Panarin for a Steep Price: Laine and Newhook on the Trade Block

The scenario circulating in hockey circles is as ambitious as it is painful for the Bell Centre faithful. The proposal suggests the Rangers would retain $5.0M of Panarin’s salary to facilitate the move, but in exchange, they demand a haul that would mortgage a significant portion of the Habs’ present and future.

Montreal would have to part ways with Patrik Laine and Alex Newhook, two key pieces of their current offense, in addition to their 2026 first-round pick and promising prospect Hayden Paupanekis.

While Panarin would arrive with the pedigree of a 120-point season and a proven ability to lead an elite attack, the loss of Laine (who has 224 career goals) and the young Newhook has sparked an inflammatory debate over whether the price is too high for a 34-year-old player.

An «All-In» Move Before the Window Closes

The Rangers’ management finds itself in a forced position of weakness; knowing that Panarin will not extend his stay, they must make a move before losing him for nothing in free agency. For the Canadiens, landing a player of «The Breadman’s» caliber would mean transitioning from a patient rebuild to becoming immediate contenders overnight.

However, the risk is extreme. The trade package includes a first-round pick in a pivotal year and two established forwards. Is it worth sacrificing team depth and Draft capital for a veteran in the final window of his contract? In Montreal, the discussions have already exploded: some see a golden opportunity to restore the franchise’s glory, while others fear this trade could be a historic mistake that dismantles the foundation laid by Martin St-Louis.
