The Captain’s Sacrifice: Sidney Crosby reveals why he stepped down from the final vs USA: ‘I was pretty close’

The wake-up call for Canadian fans this morning was, quite simply, brutal. Following the bitter overtime loss to the United States, the entire country was searching for answers, and captain Sidney Crosby has finally broken his silence. «Sid the Kid,» the man of the golden moments, was not on the ice for the final, and his explanation proved why his leadership transcends goals.

A decision of leadership, not ego

Let’s be honest: we were all hoping for a miracle after seeing him skate on Saturday. However, Crosby made the most difficult decision of his career: he chose to withdraw himself. Despite the gold medal being at stake and this likely being his final Olympic Games at age 38, Sid prioritized the group over his own name.

«I was pretty close,» Crosby confessed after the game. «But at the end of the day, I wasn’t going to be able to go out there and do what I needed to do in order to help the team win. At that point, you have to make the decision that’s best for the group. It wasn’t an easy one, but that’s hockey.»

45 minutes that defined destiny

General Manager Doug Armstrong confirmed that Crosby met with doctors for 45 minutes before making the final call. The captain did not want to take the spot of a player at 100% just because of his legendary status. That responsibility ultimately fell to Nick Suzuki, who had the heavy task of centering the line with Mitch Marner and Mark Stone, while Connor McDavid wore the «C» on his chest.

While the narrow defeat makes his absence even more heartbreaking, Crosby’s gesture solidifies his place in history. He preferred to watch from the sidelines rather than risk being a liability to his teammates in a 3-on-3 format where mobility is everything.
