CALGARY – The NHL trade market has officially shifted into high gear. Following weeks of speculation, Nazem Kadri has formally requested a trade from the Calgary Flames. The 35-year-old veteran, who has been the offensive engine for a struggling Flames squad (23-27-6), is looking to join a Stanley Cup contender rather than endure a long-term rebuild. The Montreal Canadiens are reportedly among the teams monitoring the situation closely.
The Kadri Factor: Production vs. Commitment
Despite Calgary’s collective struggles, Kadri’s individual numbers remain respectable. He has carried the offense since October, tallying 39 points in 56 games. While his -24 rating is a cause for concern, his leadership and playoff experience remain highly coveted assets.
However, any deal for Kadri involves a massive commitment:
- The Contract: His $7 million annual cap hit runs through the 2028-29 season, a significant long-term investment for any GM.
- The Clause: Kadri holds a 13-team no-trade clause, giving him substantial control over his final destination.
Will Kent Hughes Make a Move?
While the Colorado Avalanche appear to be frontrunners—having freed up cap space after moving Samuel Girard to Edmonton—the Toronto Maple Leafs and Los Angeles Kings are also in the mix. Yet, the Montreal connection is gaining traction.
Habs GM Kent Hughes could view Kadri as the ideal «accelerant» for Montreal’s rebuild. Adding a veteran with a championship pedigree would provide invaluable support for the young core at the Bell Centre, immediately transforming the look and grit of the team’s top six forwards.
Bidding War Ahead of March 6
According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, the Flames have already received «strong offers» for the center. With the trade deadline set for March 6, the bidding war is expected to intensify. The ultimate question for Montreal is whether they are willing to pay the high acquisition cost and absorb a long-term contract to bring an elite veteran presence into their locker room.
