There is a special sparkle in Jakub Dobes’ eyes, and it isn’t just the reflection of the Bell Centre ice. The Czech goaltender made a massive statement last night against the Toronto Maple Leafs, delivering a stellar performance that not only secured a win for the Montreal Canadiens but also reignited the debate over who truly deserves the starting job.
«The more I play, the calmer I feel»
Following the game, Dobes didn’t hold back. With the poise of a veteran who knows he’s in peak form, the goaltender sent a direct message to the coaching staff and Kent Hughes’ front office:
«The more I play, the more confident and calm I feel.»
These words are music to the ears of a fan base desperately seeking stability after years of uncertainty in the crease.
Technique, Size, and Mental Maturity
Dobes’ rise isn’t just a lucky streak. The young netminder is showing rapid progression, highlighted by his impeccable positioning and his ability to absorb shots without giving up unnecessary rebounds. His towering frame, combined with a mental maturity well beyond his years, makes him the prime candidate to challenge for the top spot.
Pressure on the Incumbent
With this level of consistency and fluid communication with his defensemen under high pressure, Dobes has made it clear that he will not settle for a supporting role. If Samuel Montembeault hits a rough patch, «the young wolf» is ready to carry the team on his shoulders. In Montreal, the future is knocking on the door—and it speaks with a Czech accent.
