In a move that’s already dividing Husker Nation, the University of Nebraska has extended Head Coach Matt Rhule’s contract through the 2032 season—without increasing his base salary. The restructured deal, announced Thursday, adds two years to Rhule’s tenure and includes performance-based bonuses tied to College Football Playoff appearances.
The decision comes as Nebraska enjoys a resurgence under Rhule’s leadership. After delivering the program’s first winning season in eight years in 2024 and its first bowl victory since 2015, the Huskers are off to a 6-2 start in 2025—their best eight-game record in nearly a decade.
Athletic Director Troy Dannen praised the extension as a commitment to “continuity and stability,” calling Rhule “the right leader at the right time.” University President Dr. Jeffrey P. Gold echoed the sentiment, citing a culture of “toughness, accountability, and doing things the right way.”
But not everyone is convinced. Critics question the wisdom of locking in a long-term deal before Nebraska has proven it can consistently compete at the national level. Others point to the unchanged base salary as a symbolic gesture that masks the real cost: lucrative incentives tied to playoff success in an era where expectations are sky-high.
Still, Rhule remains focused. “Our focus remains on building Nebraska Football into a perennial championship contender,” he said in a statement. “The University of Nebraska, the city of Lincoln, and the state of Nebraska are special. It is a place our family is proud to call home.”
As the Huskers prepare to host USC this Saturday night, the spotlight will be brighter than ever—not just on the scoreboard, but on whether Nebraska’s gamble on Rhule will pay off.
