LINCOLN, NE – Nebraska football’s 2027 recruiting class has rocketed to No. 4 nationally after securing a commitment from Rolesville (N.C.) running back Amir Brown, but the move has sparked debate over whether the Huskers are riding hype more than proven talent.
Brown, rated as a three-star prospect with an overall score of 88 by 247Sports, joins a six-man class that now trails only Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Ohio State in the early rankings. While Nebraska fans celebrate the climb, skeptics question whether a class headlined by mid-tier recruits can sustain momentum against perennial recruiting powerhouses.
The class already includes Omaha Central safety Tory Pittman II, Illinois quarterback Trae Taylor, Georgia wide receiver Jabari Watkins, Texas wide receiver Antayvious Ellis, and Millard North offensive tackle Matt Erickson. Taylor, in particular, has played a key role in peer recruiting, helping Nebraska build early chemistry among its incoming talent.
Head coach Matt Rhule emphasized the program’s aggressive approach, noting that the staff has focused heavily on freshmen and sophomores while preparing to be more selective in 2026. “We came in early on and felt like we had to flip over everything,” Rhule said. “Now we can be selective, get difference-makers, and I feel like the guys we have and the guys we are trying to get are difference-makers.”
Still, the contrast between Nebraska’s surging 2027 class and its struggling 2026 group — currently ranked No. 100 overall with just nine commits — raises questions about consistency. The Huskers’ reliance on the transfer portal and early recruiting momentum may prove risky if the program cannot balance immediate needs with long-term development.
For now, Nebraska’s climb into the top five is undeniable, but whether a three-star running back can anchor a class worthy of national contention remains a polarizing storyline.
