Nebraska football is once again in the spotlight for its rapid coaching turnover, as head coach Matt Rhule announced Tuesday that the program has parted ways with defensive line coach Terry Bradden Jr. after only one season in Lincoln. Bradden, who joined the Cornhuskers in February following several years as an assistant defensive line coach with the Kansas City Chiefs, becomes the third major departure of the offseason, raising questions about stability within Rhule’s staff.
Bradden’s exit follows the dismissals of defensive coordinator John Butler and offensive line coach Donovan Raiola. Nebraska has already moved quickly to fill those vacancies, hiring San Diego State defensive coordinator Rob Aurich and Georgia Tech offensive line coach Geep Wade. Rhule insisted that no further position coaches will be let go, but the string of changes has fueled speculation about the direction of the program and the urgency to align staff with his vision.
“We’re actively pursuing what we’ll do defensive line wise,” Rhule said, thanking Bradden for his work and time in Lincoln. He emphasized that the next hire will be coordinated closely with Aurich, whose 4-2-5 defensive scheme requires specific personnel and coaching expertise. Rhule noted that Aurich had strong ideas about how the defensive line should be structured, and that it was important to bring in coaches familiar with his approach.
In the meantime, bowl preparation has seen Mike Ekeler assisting with edge players alongside Phil Simpson and Ira Savage-Lewis. Rhule explained that the temporary adjustments are designed to give players exposure to the coaches who will guide them next season, ensuring continuity and familiarity. Wade has already begun working with the offensive line, a move Rhule said was crucial for players to understand what the future will look like under the new staff.
