Aurich, considered one of the rising figures among defensive assistants, arrives after completely transforming San Diego State’s defense. His unit ranked among the nation’s best, allowing fewer than 13 points per game and showcasing an aggression that caught the attention of multiple programs. Rhule described him as energetic, intense, and capable of instilling a relentless mindset in his players. His interview in Lincoln was as unconventional as his style: it included accompanying Rhule to a youth girls basketball game, a moment that sealed their connection.
Internal support came quickly. Nebraska cornerback Andrew Marshall, who previously played for Aurich at Idaho, didn’t hesitate when Rhule asked for a reference. His response was blunt: “Hire him.” Marshall described him as unpredictable, funny, and obsessed with football, a profile that contrasts sharply with the more restrained tone of the previous defensive staff.
Aurich replaces John Butler, dismissed after a defensive collapse that left Nebraska exposed in lopsided losses to Penn State and Iowa, where the Huskers surrendered a combined 77 points. All signs point to Aurich implementing a four-man front, aiming to restore identity to a defense that lost its edge in critical moments.
On the offensive side, Geep Wade takes over the offensive line after three successful years at Georgia Tech. Under his leadership, the Yellow Jackets became one of the ACC’s top rushing offenses and allowed only nine sacks all season, a stark contrast to Nebraska’s long-standing protection issues. His arrival follows the departure of Donovan Raiola, who struggled to stabilize a unit that never found continuity or physical dominance.
Rhule acknowledged that offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen played a key role in bringing Wade to Lincoln, convinced that his technical approach and track record in developing linemen could be the foundation for rebuilding an offense that has lost its identity.
