Lincoln, Nebraska — The Huskers’ defense takes an unexpected hit. Veteran defensive back Malcolm Hartzog Jr., a key figure in Nebraska’s secondary over four seasons, has decided to enter the transfer portal when it officially opens on January 2, according to a source close to the program.
Hartzog, who began his senior season with a game-sealing interception against Cincinnati in the 2025 opener, ended up redshirting after a lingering injury kept him sidelined. With one year of eligibility remaining, he will look for a new destination to close out his college career.
During his time in Lincoln, the 5’9” defender played safety, corner, and nickel, starting 32 games and recording 108 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, eight interceptions, and 21 passes defended. His versatility made him one of the team’s defensive anchors, but Nebraska will now have to reconfigure its scheme without him in 2026.
The move comes amid recent NCAA calendar changes, which eliminated the spring transfer window and shifted the winter window from December to January. Although the portal will officially open January 2 and remain active until January 16, players are allowed to announce their intentions beforehand, though they cannot have official contact with other programs or take visits until they are formally listed in the database.
Hartzog Jr.’s departure not only leaves a gap in the defense but also raises questions about Nebraska’s ability to retain its veterans in an era increasingly defined by player mobility.
