Sixteen years ago, Nebraska delivered one of the most dominant bowl performances in its storied football history, dismantling Arizona 33-0 in the 2009 Pacific Life Holiday Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium. The victory marked the Cornhuskers’ first-ever bowl shutout and remains a defining moment in the program’s legacy.
Ranked No. 20 at the time, Nebraska closed the season with a 10-4 record, securing its first 10-win campaign since 2003. The Wildcats, ranked No. 22, were left stunned, finishing 8-5 after being held to just 109 yards of total offense. The Blackshirts’ defense, led by All-American Ndamukong Suh and Defensive MVP Matt O’Hanlon, suffocated Arizona, allowing only six first downs and forcing turnovers that set the tone from the opening minutes.
Nebraska’s offense was equally efficient, racking up 396 yards with a balanced attack. Special teams added to the dominance, highlighted by kicker Alex Henery’s perfect 4-for-4 field goal performance and Niles Paul’s explosive 74-yard touchdown reception, which set a bowl-game record.
The win was Nebraska’s largest bowl margin since the 2000 Alamo Bowl and rivaled historic blowouts against Georgia, Florida, and Notre Dame. Head coach Bo Pelini, undefeated in bowl appearances at the time, declared after the game: “Nebraska’s back, and we’re here to stay.”
For Arizona, the shutout was more than a loss—it was a humiliation that underscored the gap between the programs. Sixteen years later, the memory of that night still lingers as one of the most lopsided defeats in Wildcats’ postseason history.
