LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska has landed former Notre Dame quarterback Kenny Minchey, a redshirt sophomore who officially entered the transfer portal Friday and announced his commitment to the Cornhuskers on Sunday.
Minchey, once a top ESPN 300 recruit and the No. 5 dual-threat quarterback in the 2023 class, arrives in Lincoln after failing to secure the starting job in South Bend.
He lost a prolonged competition to CJ Carr, appearing in just six games this season with modest production: 20-of-26 passing for 196 yards, plus 84 rushing yards and a touchdown.
For head coach Matt Rhule and offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen, Minchey represents both risk and opportunity. Nebraska’s quarterback room was left unsettled after two-year starter Dylan Raiola departed via the portal, and freshman TJ Lateef struggled to keep the Huskers afloat following Raiola’s season-ending injury. Nebraska limped to a 7-6 finish after a promising 6-2 start.
The Cornhuskers now pin their hopes on Minchey as a potential starter in 2026, banking on his untapped upside rather than proven results. Critics argue Nebraska is betting its future on a quarterback Notre Dame deemed expendable, while supporters see Minchey as a high-ceiling talent finally given the chance to lead.
