Nebraska football has been blindsided by a potential coaching crisis. Head coach Matt Rhule admitted on Wednesday that he is «learning things on social media» regarding the future of special teams coordinator Mike Ekeler, who is reportedly being pursued by the USC Trojans. Despite a massive «first or second highest in the country» contract extension offer, the Nebraskan native may be on the verge of jumping ship to Los Angeles.
A massive extension ignored
The news comes as a shock to the Husker faithful, especially after Ekeler led a historic turnaround for Nebraska’s special teams in 2025. In a candid interview on the Zach Gelb Show, Rhule revealed that the university offered Ekeler a «huge, huge, huge» extension mid-season to secure his loyalty.
«I don’t know what’s happening,» Rhule admitted, visibly frustrated by the lack of clarity. «If people want to take other jobs, all I can do is put them under contract and offer them extensions and hope that they stay. Just like there’s a transfer portal for players, coaches also have that same right.»
