The man who reinvented the running back position
While modern fans are used to versatile «dual-threat» backs, Roger Craig was the blueprint. During his 11-year career with the 49ers, Raiders, and Vikings, he didn’t just play the game—he changed it. In 1985, he shattered expectations by becoming the first player in NFL history to record 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season, a feat so difficult it has only been repeated twice in the forty years since.
Despite being a three-time Super Bowl champion and the first player ever to score three touchdowns in a single Super Bowl, Craig’s journey to Canton has been a frustratingly slow climb.
He enters the Hall alongside superstars like Drew Brees and Larry Fitzgerald, but for Craig, this honor is a long-overdue validation of a career that defined the 49ers’ dynasty of the 1980s.

The induction is also a massive victory for the University of Nebraska. Craig becomes the sixth former Husker to earn a gold jacket, joining the ranks of legends like Will Shields and Mick Tingelhoff. During his time in Lincoln, Craig was a force of nature, rushing for over 2,400 yards and 26 touchdowns before being drafted in the second round in 1983.
