Matt Rhule confirms the return of the Red-White Game and major defensive shifts for the 2026 Huskers

LINCOLN, Nebraska — Head coach Matt Rhule led a press conference this weekend following the completion of the first week of Spring Practice, delivering several key announcements that have energized the Husker fan base. In a significant change from last season, Rhule officially confirmed the return of the traditional «Red-White» Spring Game, scheduled for March 28 at Memorial Stadium.

Rhule explained that the decision to return to the traditional format was driven by changes in the transfer portal calendar. «We missed it and we wanted to do it. It’s a great thing for the fans,» the coach noted, emphasizing that last year’s exhibition format did not meet the desired competitive objectives.

A Completely Reimagined Defense A major highlight of the media availability was the transition to a new defensive scheme under the direction of new coordinator Rob Aurich. Rhule praised Aurich’s clarity and attention to detail, stating there are «no gray areas» in the teaching of the new system. The defense, which is moving from a 3-3-5 scheme to a more traditional 4-2-5, aims to regain the aggressiveness that waned toward the end of last season.

Roster Status and Notable Absences Not all news was positive, as Rhule presented a list of 13 players who will be unavailable throughout the spring due to injuries. Notable absences include wide receiver Demetrius Bell, tight end Carter Nelson, and linebacker Dawson Merritt. Rhule emphasized that due to the early start of practices in February, these players will have ample time to rehabilitate before fall camp.

Quarterback Competition On the field, much of the attention is focused on the integration of Anthony Colandrea, the transfer from Virginia/UNLV, who is competing for the starting job. Rhule highlighted his improvisation skills and leadership, though he stressed that the focus of these initial 15 practices is «pure teaching» and that there is currently no set depth chart.

With the Spring Game on the horizon and a defense in full reconstruction, the Nebraska program appears to be betting on a more physical and early preparation for what Rhule defines as a «pivotal year» for his tenure in Lincoln.
