The prodigal son has returned to Lincoln. Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule had nothing but high praise following the news that quarterback Daniel Kaelin is rejoining the Huskers program. After a one-season stint with the Virginia Cavaliers in 2025, the Elkhorn native has decided to come back home for a fresh start with the Big Red.
A Cornhusker Through and Through
Kaelin, who originally committed to Nebraska in May 2023, entered the transfer portal in late 2024 to explore other opportunities. During his time in Virginia, he appeared in seven games, recording 339 passing yards and a touchdown. Despite being away, his heart remained in Nebraska, and Rhule made it clear that the door was always open.
«To me, he’s the true definition of a Cornhusker,» Rhule told the media.
«He grew up loving this state and this program, and it’s almost like he never left, to be quite honest with you.»
The coach noted that Kaelin remained close with his teammates throughout his time away, making his reintegration into the locker room seamless.
The Future of the QB Room
While the battle for the starting job is expected to feature Anthony Colandrea and TJ Lateef, Kaelin’s return adds vital depth and familiar veteran leadership to Rhule’s system. Although he may serve as a backup in the immediate future, his deep understanding of the program and local roots make him a significant asset for the seasons to come. Nebraska hasn’t just gained a player; they’ve regained a symbol of the loyalty and identity Rhule is building in Lincoln.
