Matt Rhule and Nebraska Start New Show After Losing Old Plot

LINCOLN — When Dylan Raiola left the field injured as Nebraska was looking to close out a signature win over USC, it marked a significant turning point in the 2025 season, head coach Matt Rhule’s tenure, and Husker Nation’s blind faith. The old joke around Nebraska Football is that the Huskers have been the repeat national champions of the offseason since the early 1970s. Finally, Big Red fans are rejecting the «Kool-Aid» after being burned once too often in 2025. The final three games—blowout losses to Penn State, Iowa, and Utah—shattered the belief of Nebraska fans in a return to glory anytime soon, if ever.

A Charismatic Preacher Goes Solemn

Matt Rhule arrived in 2023, saying and doing all the right things off the field. But after three years, he has not lived up to the sermons that so moved Husker Nation early in his tenure. While Rhule ended the nearly decade-long bowl drought, the 2025 collapse showed that Nebraska was better but still not meeting expectations. With the defection of Raiola and a host of other players, along with several changes in the assistant coaching staff, Nebraska fans have become fatigued and cynical. Matt Rhule lost the plot—but instead of chasing it, he is starting an entirely different show.

A Generational Shift in Fandom

Husker Nation is comprised of three distinct factions. There is the older group that saw Bob Devaney launch a powerhouse in the 60s and 70s, and the middle generation that witnessed Tom Osborne’s dominance in the 90s. For them, Husker football was life.

However, a new generation of fans has emerged who have never experienced the glory years. All they know is mediocrity and hype that never translates to results. With endless sports entertainment options available at their fingertips—from pro leagues to Husker basketball and volleyball—this younger demographic is more prone to apathy. This offseason, the collective cry from Husker Nation is «No Mas!»

A New Strategy for 2026

The media is already attempting to put a positive spin on spring practice, but the roster remains unsettled at almost every key position. After two years of the program revolving around a single 5-star quarterback, Rhule is pivoting to a «team-first» approach where the final product is intended to be greater than the sum of its parts.

Rhule has his program back, but he faces 2026 with much lower expectations. Many sportsbooks have the Huskers’ win total set at under 6. In years past, this would have caused a riot on social media; today, fans don’t even have the energy to be bothered. Matt Rhule’s program is finally getting serious, and this understated approach may prove to be the most vital catalyst for success since Dr. Tom’s final championship.
