LINCOLN, Neb. — The transition to a new system is usually a slow grind, but senior quarterback Anthony Colandrea appears to be «ahead of schedule.» Operating under Offensive Coordinator Dana Holgorsen’s high-tempo offense, Colandrea commanded the huddle with a veteran presence that stood out in front of more than 28,000 fans at Memorial Stadium.
Efficiency Under Pressure
Despite gusty winds that made downfield passing a challenge, Colandrea orchestrated two long scoring drives in the first half. He finished the day completing 12 of 19 passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns.
- The Long Ball: His 27-yard strike to Jacory Barney stood as the game’s longest completion.
- The Highlight Reel: A perfectly placed nine-yard toss to Quinn Clark, who hauled it in with a spectacular one-handed grab, showcased Colandrea’s ability to put the ball exactly where his receiver needed it.
Mastering the Tempo
Colandrea’s experience at Virginia and UNLV has made him a natural fit for Holgorsen’s fast-paced scheme. «The guys love tempo because it catches the defense off-balance,» Colandrea noted after the game. His ability to bleed the clock—specifically on a 14-play, 60-yard opening drive—demonstrated a level of control that Husker fans have been longing for.
The Road Ahead: A Fierce Competition
While Colandrea was the standout, he isn’t handed the starting job just yet. The competition remains stiff with TJ Lateef and Daniel Kaelin also vying for the QB1 spot. Coach Matt Rhule emphasized that Colandrea is only «cracking the surface» of his potential, praising his ability to play «100 miles per hour» and trust his progressions.
