LINCOLN, Neb. — As Nebraska wraps up its spring sessions, sophomore defender Donovan Jones is proving to be the versatile weapon the Huskers’ secondary needs. After a standout performance in the recent spring scrimmage, the Omaha native is quickly evolving into a «Swiss army knife» for Defensive Backs Coach Addison Williams.
Versatility at the Third Level
Jones, who started 11 games last season and led the team in pass breakups, has shown he can play virtually anywhere in the secondary. While he spent most of last year at safety, new Defensive Coordinator Rob Aurich is leveraging Jones’ 6-foot-1, 200-pound frame in the nickel position—a hybrid role crucial for the Huskers’ 4-2-5 defensive scheme.
«I had to learn it pretty quickly, but it wasn’t that difficult,» Jones said regarding his transition to the nickel spot. His instincts were on full display during the spring game, where he recorded the defense’s only turnover by intercepting a tipped pass against the first-team offense.
Building a Dominant Defense
Despite his individual success and Academic All-Big Ten honors, Jones is focused on the bigger picture: improving a rushing defense that struggled in 2025. He has emphasized setting the edges and being a stronger presence on the perimeter heading into summer workouts.
Beyond the physical grind, Jones is stepping up as a vocal leader. «I know that the plays are going to come to me just as long as I do my job,» he noted. With ambitions to make the Blackshirts one of the elite units in the Big Ten this fall, Jones continues to lead by example, proving that for him, excellence is just «another day at the office.»
