Boom or Bust? Nebraska’s Transfer Portal Struggles Place Massive Pressure on «Blockbuster» 2027 Class

LINCOLN, NE — For the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the Transfer Portal has been a double-edged sword that, more often than not, has left the program bleeding. As the Matt Rhule era continues to evolve, a series of high-profile «misses» in the portal has shifted the spotlight away from quick fixes and toward a desperate need for a home-run 2027 recruiting class.

The Personification of Disaster

Nowhere has the portal been more unkind to Nebraska than at the quarterback position. The Jeff Sims experiment—Rhule’s first major swing—is now remembered by fans as a «disaster.» The fallout was so severe that the program «sold the farm» to land Dylan Raiola, hoping for a three-year savior. Instead, Raiola departed after just two seasons, leaving the Huskers to once again roll the dice on a transfer, this time Anthony Colandrea.

The inconsistency isn’t limited to the signal-callers:

  • Running Back Regret: Nebraska has been criticized for being «passive» at RB. While Dante Dowdell showed flashes, his one-and-done stint left the team scrambling. It took a miracle breakout from internal talent Emmett Johnson to save the 2025 ground game—a «one-man band» performance that wasn’t actually part of the original plan.
  • The Edge Rusher Void: Despite paying «top dollar» for premium talent, the returns have been lukewarm. Williams Nwaneri, projected to be a defensive monster, finished last season with a quiet 2.5 sacks—hardly the game-changing impact Nebraska expected for their investment.

The 2027 Class: From Elite to «Decent»

With the 2026 class being both small and poorly ranked, all eyes turned to 2027. However, the early momentum is already showing signs of fading. After a scorching start to the winter that saw Nebraska boasting a top-tier group, the Huskers have slipped to No. 20 in the nation.

What once looked like a «blockbuster» class is now settling into the «decent» territory typical of previous Nebraska hauls. For a program looking to break into the Big Ten elite, «decent» might not be enough to overcome the portal’s volatility.

The Summer Pivot

Coach Matt Rhule now faces a pivotal summer. With nervousness growing around the program’s ability to land «unmitigated successes» in the portal, the upcoming summer visits represent a must-win battleground. Nebraska must regain its recruiting momentum to ensure that the 2027 class provides a foundation that the portal has, so far, failed to build.
