LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska Football is heading back to Kansas City. The athletic department officially announced Tuesday that the Cornhuskers will open their 2027 season against the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks at Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs.
The matchup is set for Friday, August 27, 2027, marking the second time in three seasons that Nebraska will kick off its schedule in Kansas City.
A Calendar Shift and Historic First-Ever Meeting
The game was originally scheduled to take place at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln on September 11. However, recent calendar adjustments approved by the FBS Oversight Committee—permitting schools to start their season a week earlier—allowed Nebraska to shift the contest to Friday night. The opening date move also frees up September 11 for an anticipated Big Ten Conference matchup.
This game will mark the first-ever meeting between Nebraska and Miami (Ohio) on the gridiron. As part of a broader scheduling agreement, the two programs have also set a future clash for September 6, 2031, in Lincoln.
Building on Kansas City Success
Nebraska’s return to Kansas City comes on the heels of a successful trip in 2025, where a packed crowd of red-clad Husker fans watched NU defeat Cincinnati 20-17 at Arrowhead Stadium. With that victory, Nebraska improved to 2-1 all-time in games played at the iconic venue dating back to 1998.
Nebraska Deputy AD/COO Haven Fields expressed excitement about returning to Missouri:
«Our fans and team enjoyed the game in Kansas City a year ago, and shortly after that contest we began having discussions with the Chiefs about returning to Arrowhead,» Fields stated. «The 2027 schedule provided an opportunity to play a game in another great venue with Memorial Stadium at a reduced capacity, while maintaining seven games in Lincoln for our fans.»
2027 Non-Conference Slate Overview
Following the Friday night opener in Kansas City, the Huskers will return to Lincoln to round out their non-conference schedule:
- Aug. 27: vs. Miami (Ohio) (Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City)
- Sept. 4: vs. Northern Illinois (Lincoln, NE)
- Sept. 11: Expected Big Ten Conference Game
- Sept. 18: vs. Northern Iowa (Lincoln, NE)
The Kansas City opener will not be included in Nebraska’s seven-game home season ticket package for 2027. Ticket sales and distribution details for Arrowhead Stadium will be released by the athletic department at a later date.
