Veteran tight end Nate Boerkircher could play his final season of eligibility elsewhere, as the tight end has entered the transfer portal per a source.
The 6-foot-5, 250-pounder is coming off his best season as a Husker, having played in every game and making six starts. Boerkircher caught six passes for a career-high 93 yards. The reserve tight end had his best two games in Nebraska’s final two games of the season in 2024.
The Aurora native caught two passes for 29 yards against Wisconsin and finished the Iowa game with two catches for a career-high 39 yards receiving. Both Boerkircher and Luke Lindenmeyer seemed to impress offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen.
Rhule said after Nebraska’s 44-25 win over Wisconsin that Boerkircher is steady and liked both his runs after catches in that game. «And I think Luke Lindenmeyer, you talk about a guy who since the bye week since Dana showed up, who to me has put his foot on the gas and accelerated. In practice he’s trying to put people on their backs. He’s trying to finish blocks. And those guys are just really dependable guys.»
In 2023, Boerkircher played in all 12 games, making five starts. That season he caught five passes for 51 yards while adding one rush for 11 yards and served as a valuable piece of Nebraska’s rushing attack as a blocker.
Boerkircher was among the players who walked on Senior Day and has one season of eligibility remaining.
Players can enter the portal and possibly return. Nebraska has had a couple examples of players who planned to enter the portal but are now returning in running back Emmett Johnson and defensive lineman Keona Davis.
