The San Francisco 49ers are signing veteran NFL running back Ameer Abdullah, sources have told Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports/247Sports. The former Nebraska standout, who dazzled in a Husker uniform more than a decade ago, appears to have a new team for the 2025 season.
Abdullah, 32, reportedly tried out with the 49ers on Wednesday and has seemingly recovered from a foot injury he suffered last December. He spent the 2024 season with the Raiders, where he carried the ball 66 times for 311 yards and two touchdowns, while also catching 40 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns across 16 games.
The former second-round draft pick has compiled impressive career totals, including 1,994 rushing yards, 1,468 receiving yards, 3,783 kick return yards, and 19 touchdowns.
Abdullah has maintained a strong connection with the Nebraska program, returning to Lincoln for various events. He is well-remembered for his dominant senior season in 2014, where he rushed for 1,611 yards and was a Doak Walker Award Finalist. He is just the second Husker in history to have two seasons with more than 1,500 rushing yards. Most recently, he’s been in consistent communication with current running back Emmett Johnson as he prepares for the upcoming season.
