Nebraska tight end Mac Markway will miss the entire upcoming season after tearing his ACL this week, head coach Matt Rhule confirmed on Thursday. The injury marks the second consecutive season Markway will be sidelined by a torn ACL.
According to Rhule, Markway experienced swelling in his surgically repaired knee. Subsequent tests confirmed the tear. «Tests confirmed the ACL repair failed for him. Heartbreaking news,» Rhule said. «He’s an unbelievable human. Felt terrible for him.»
Markway’s setback follows a similar season-ending injury he sustained in his first week of practice last fall. He had joined the Husker program as a highly-touted four-star tight end, ranked No. 9 in the country by 247Sports in the 2023 class, after transferring from LSU without entering the transfer portal. He redshirted last season and missed spring practice while rehabilitating.
Prior to his time at Nebraska, Markway played in 12 games as a freshman at LSU, where he recorded three catches for 16 yards and a touchdown. He was also a regular on the team’s kickoff return units.
Offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen also shared his sympathy for the player. «My heart goes out to him, he’s really been through a lot,» Holgorsen said. He added that the team is prepared to handle the injury, stating, «Injuries happen. You have to prepare for that at every position. We’re going to be OK at that position. We’ve got six other tight ends that all have potential.»
