On the eve of the season opener, Nebraska has awarded its 11th Blackshirt. The recipient is sophomore defensive end Keona Davis, who revealed the news through a social media post, showing off his new black No. 97 practice jersey.
Davis earned the coveted honor after an intense position battle with fellow defensive end Jaylen George. Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule had commented earlier in the week that both players were performing at a very high level during fall camp, which had delayed the decision on the final Blackshirt of the preseason.
Rhule has been clear about his philosophy regarding the award, which symbolizes defensive excellence in the Cornhuskers’ program. «We haven’t wanted to make it a 13, 14, 15-person participation trophy type deal,» Rhule said. The coach explained that, after talking with legendary coach Tom Osborne, he decided to honor the «purest form» of the award, giving it to those who truly earn a starting spot.
Davis, who avoided a redshirt in his freshman season by appearing in 12 games, was expected to be a key piece of the Husker defensive line this year. Despite the decision, both Davis and George will be a fundamental part of Nebraska’s game plan for Thursday’s matchup against Cincinnati.
