The announcement by Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes has shaken the NHL landscape. The club has signed a three-year entry-level contract (2026-27 to 2028-29) with Bryce Pickford, a 19-year-old defenseman who is breaking molds in the WHL.
Pickford, captain of the Medicine Hat Tigers, has played 31 games this season and scored 25 goals, leading the league in scoring while adding 19 assists. His 44 points place him fourth overall and leave him just three shy of matching his personal best (47 points in 48 games last season).
The Edmonton native already boasts an impressive résumé: two Ed Chynoweth Cups, first with the Seattle Thunderbirds in 2022-23 and most recently with the Tigers in 2024-25. His ability to combine leadership, defensive solidity, and surprising offensive efficiency has made him an atypical figure in junior hockey.
Selected in the third round of the 2025 Draft (81st overall), Pickford emerges as a bold but ambitious bet for the Canadiens, who see in him a talent capable of redefining the role of defenseman in the franchise.
