MONTREAL, QC. — It was a night of legends at the Bell Centre, but as the hats flew for Cole Caufield’s 50th goal, another milestone was being carved into the franchise’s storied rafters. With a two-assist performance against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Nick Suzuki officially became the highest-scoring captain in a single season in Montreal Canadiens history.
Surpassing a 30-Year Record
Suzuki’s performance brought his season total to 98 points, eclipsing the previous record of 96 points held by Pierre Turgeon since the 1995-96 season. For nearly three decades, Turgeon’s mark stood as the gold standard for leadership production in Montreal, but Suzuki’s consistency and chemistry with Caufield have finally moved the bar.
With 98 points, Suzuki now holds the 11th most productive season in the 116-year history of the franchise. While he remains just shy of the Top 10—currently held by legends Steve Shutt and Pete Mahovlich with 105 points—his ascent into the elite tier of Canadiens scorers cements his status as one of the premier centers in the league.
The Architect Behind the «Rocket»
Though Suzuki often shies away from the spotlight, his teammates were quick to point out that Caufield’s historic run wouldn’t have been possible without the Captain. Suzuki provided the primary assist on the 50th goal, a perfect cross-ice feed that mirrored the duo’s synergy all season.
«Nick is the engine,» head coach Martin St. Louis noted post-game. «We celebrate Cole’s 50, but you don’t get there without a captain who plays 200 feet and finds you in the right spots every single night.»
