Canadiens Have Trade Target to Consider in 6-Foot-4 Defender

MONTREAL — The Montreal Canadiens have maintained a quiet profile this offseason when it comes to acquiring new talent. However, with time remaining before the puck drops on the 2026–27 NHL season, general manager Kent Hughes and the front office still have an opportunity to address key roster needs—specifically on the right side of their blue line.

A closer look at Montreal’s current defensive depth reveals a potential need for a reliable, right-shot blue-liner. One intriguing target who fits the bill is Nashville Predators defenseman Nick Perbix.

A Low-Risk Depth Upgrade with Size and Experience

At 6-foot-4, Perbix offers the ideal frame and skill set to stabilize the Canadiens’ bottom defensive pairing while providing dependable insurance whenever injuries strike during a grueling 82-game campaign.

Financial flexibility remains one of Perbix’s biggest selling points. With a manageable $2.75 million cap hit tied down through the end of the 2026–27 season, acquiring the 27-year-old would carry minimal financial risk for Montreal.

Offensive Upside from the Point

Perbix spent this past season in Nashville, skating in 79 games while recording three goals, 13 points, and blocking 95 shots. Prior to his stint with the Predators, he spent three seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he consistently demonstrated an ability to chip in offensively from the blue line:

  • Proven Production: Perbix surpassed the 19-point mark in each of his three full seasons with Tampa Bay.
  • Career-High Campaign: During the 2023–24 season, he tallied a career-best 24 points in 77 games.

If the Canadiens are seeking a cost-effective right-shot defenseman to bolster their blue-line depth without surrendering premium trade assets, making a run at Nick Perbix could be a calculated move for the organization.
