As the Nebraska Huskers gear up for their first spring practice this Saturday, head coach Matt Rhule has released a significant list of players who will be sidelined or awaiting medical clearance. The update, provided during his Thursday press conference, highlights the physical toll of the previous season and the cautious approach the coaching staff is taking with their roster.
Key starters and newcomers sidelined
The list of players ruled out for the entirety of spring ball is extensive, affecting nearly every unit on the field. Among those who will not participate are wide receivers Demitrius Bell and Janiran Bonner, along with offensive linemen Gunnar Gottula and JuJu Marks. Defensively, the Huskers will be without cornerback Blye Hill and linebackers Dawson Merritt and Gage Stenger.
A notable addition to the injury list is safety Rex Guthrie. Rhule praised Guthrie’s toughness, revealing that the safety played through a shoulder tear for much of last season. Guthrie, who started eight games and recorded 63 tackles, finally underwent surgery after being unable to finish the team’s bowl game.
Awaiting the green light
While many are officially out, a small group of players are still holding out hope for a spring return. Defensive lineman Tyson Terry, edge Connor Connealy, linebacker Trent Uhlir, and center Jake Peters are currently awaiting final medical clearance to join their teammates in action.
Coach Rhule emphasized that while these absences are a challenge, they provide a valuable opportunity for younger players to step into the rotation and prove their worth before the fall season begins.
