LINCOLN, NE – Nebraska football is turning back the clock to move forward. Head coach Matt Rhule announced that this Saturday’s 11 a.m. Red-White Game at Memorial Stadium will return to a traditional game format, a significant shift from last year’s «Husker Games» skills competition.
Rhule emphasized that while quarterbacks will wear protected green jerseys, the rest of the roster will treat the scrimmage like a live Saturday in the fall.
«It will look like a game,» Rhule told reporters. «We want to see the ones going against the ones. If we have to put the offense in one color and defense in another, we’ll still play it like a game.»
The Debut of the Aurich Defense
The spotlight will shine brightest on the defensive side of the ball. This will be the first public look at the Huskers under new defensive coordinator Rob Aurich. After moving on from the 3-3-5 system, Aurich has spent the spring installing a more aggressive 4-2-5 scheme. Rhule isn’t looking for flashy new tricks on Saturday; he wants to see the fundamentals.
«I’m anxious to see the tackling,» Rhule said. «I want to see the same standard of running to the ball and getting off blocks.»
Recruiting and Momentum
The traditional format isn’t just for the fans; it’s a strategic move for the 30+ elite recruits expected to be in attendance. Rhule wants visitors to experience the «passion and heart» of Memorial Stadium in a true game setting.
Coming off a disciplined week of practice following spring break, Rhule praised his team’s «attention to detail,» noting that the players returned from the time off «wanting to do more.»
